Glasgow University Student Television

Studio

The GUST Studio

We have access to an actual Television studio that is run by the University’s Media Services for in-house productions, Film and TV classes and, of course, GUST. It’s located in Southpark House. We have three cameras, a lighting rig, a communications system and a Gallery with vision mixer, sounddesk, camera control unit, lots of screens, and crazy people.

Studio Roles

In GUST, everyone gets a shot at everything there is to do in a TV studio. More experienced GUSTies will gladly give you a hand if you want to try something new for the first time. We’ve compiled a short introduction to the roles available most weeks.

  • The Director and Assistant Director oversee the whole studio. They sit in the gallery, delegate tasks to others through the voice intercom system and work the vision mixer. Usually the programme editors decide who takes on this important job.
  • Lighting
  • The VT Operator pushes buttons. Sometimes even two at the same time. They make sure we are actually recording the programme to tape, and they get to say the countdown.
  • The Sound guys (or girls!) are responsible that all presenters get a working microphone and they run the sound-check to make sure everyone can be heard on the recording.
  • Presenter
  • Floor Manager
  • Camera
  • Autocue
  • I’m sure I forgot someone.

Much more detail about all roles and tips can be found in the GUST Guide, a copy of which you can request from the Technical Coordinator.
